Silicone is much heavier than plastic and much less flexible. Therefore, removing the air from the silicone bag can be tricky. It can be done by squeezing the bag with a clip attached or by using the fork tool. Typically it is not possible to completely remove the air out of the silicone bag. However, it will not cause any issues because the bag will not float due to its heaviness and the bag will absorb the expansion of a small amount of air left inside.
Another difference between silicone and plastic is that silicone is a heat conductor (the material itself will absorb heat) while plastic is an insulator that does not absorb heat. This characteristic of silicone promotes even heat distribution inside of the bag.
Silicone bags cannot be used with the commercial sealers for sous vide for a simple reason: silicone (unlike plastic) is exceptionally resistant to heat and it can withstand temperatures up to 428 F (220 C). Plastic melts at about half of that. Sous vide sealers do not generate the temperature high enough for melting of silicone.
“End Plastic Pollution” set the tone for this year’s annual Earth Day celebration, held worldwide on April 22. From injuring marine life to disrupting hormonal balances, from littering our landscapes to clogging our streams, the exponential growth in plastic pollution threatens the very survival of our planet.
It’s too easy to continue using plastic bags. It’s too easy to throw them into the garbage where they end up in landfills. Every year around 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide. They are difficult and costly to recycle and most end up on landfill sites where they take around 300 years to photodegrade.
Plastic bags, which are made out of fossil fuels, break down into tiny toxic particles that contaminate the soil and waterways and enter the food chain when animals accidentally ingest them. Plastic bags release harmful chemicals (carcinogens and endocrine disruptors) into the environment that end up poisoning us. They pose danger to sea life. Animals mistake plastic bags for food, which clogs their intestines and leads to slow starvation. Others become entangled in plastic bags and drown. We need to change!
There is a safe, healthy and environmentally friendly alternative…silicone! Silicone is a durable, rubber-like material made from sand and air; plentiful and environmentally friendly resources. Silicone is reusable, recyclable, naturally free of phthalates, PBA, BPS, PFCs, perchlorates, nitrates, and does not release any toxic chemicals. Silicone is not toxic to aquatic or soil organisms, it is not hazardous waste (learn more about silicone).
Silicone bags are more durable, thicker and feel different than plastic bags because silicone is a better material than plastic. The reusable silicone bags are cleaned after use and they are dishwasher safe. The use of silicone bags for food storage and preparation is good for both our health and our planet. And they save you money too!
So, is changing from disposable plastic bags to reusable silicone bags worth it? As silicone is a safer, healthier and environmentally friendly alternative to plastic, can we really afford not to?
Vented or Leak-Proof
Open, Vented or Leak-Proof
Silicone bags are one of the best tools in the kitchen: use it to freeze, heat, microwave, steam, store, sous vide all in the same bag. Safe for storing and freezing of breast milk
The integrated care labels are printed on each part so you know exactly how to use it in a safe way
The optional tool is included to help
in closing the fully extended silicone bag. This tool can also be helpful in removing the excess air out of the bag during sous vide cooking
Pure Silicone FDA Food Grade - without colors, fillers or any other chemicals, not treated with platinum, tested for purity per FDA Code of Federal Regulations Title 21.177.2600.
Pure silicone is molded into the shape of the bag, which is only a physical process and does not change the chemical composition or properties of silicone.
Self-standing for easy filling as well as heating foods in the oven and microwave with the graduation marks up to 74 oz, 9 cups, 2.2 liters.
The graduation applies when the bag is open. After closing, the volume inside the bag will rise, but will never overflow.
